Abstract

The Nigerian print media industry is currently grappling with an "economics of decline" and digital disruption, resulting in high mortality rates for legacy publications. This qualitative phenomenological study investigates the strategic management and adaptations adopted by the Nigerian Tribune (African Newspapers Limited) to sustain its operations as Nigeria’s oldest surviving private newspaper. Grounded in the Theory of Mediamorphosis, the Contingency Approach, and the Resource-Based View, the research explores how the organisation aligns its internal structures with a volatile external environment. Data were gathered through a semi-structured in-depth interview with a high-level management executive. Thematic analysis reveals that survival is driven by a hybrid newsroom model that treats digital and print editions as independent revenue entities to avoid cannibalisation. Operational resilience is underpinned by a rigorous "A-Team" recruitment protocol (requiring a 70% pass mark), disciplined cost-monitoring including a transition to solar power, and the preservation of editorial independence as an inimitable brand resource. The study concludes that the organisation’s resilience stems from successful "internal corrections" and a commitment to technological savvy. Recommendations include accelerating the monetisation of digital content and institutionalising continuous ICT training to engage the "now generation".
